Introduction to The Asian Power Couples 2017
Although it has been a controversial year, it has also been a time when many have taken up charity work with renewed passion, ushering in a Golden Age for Asian Philanthropy. Welcome to the fourth edition of the definitive list of the UK’s Asian Power Couples Hot 100. This year I am delighted that nearly a third of the list comprises couples who are new to the list – many of the newcomers are younger too, working in sectors previously not featured in this list, like the education technology and digital sectors.
Sadly, this means we have had to wish farewell to many, not because they are any less of a “power couple” but many have emigrated and this is a list of those primarily resident in the UK. I have defined the entry criteria for selection for this curated list so please take a moment to take a look.
Unlike any Rich List, the Asian Power Couples list is not about how much money you make, but about what you do. However, it is particularly pleasing to see the unsurpassed level of charitable giving by so many of those featured; either directly to individual institutions, via charity fundraisers or dedicated campaigns. The task of selecting the Top 5 Couples in Philanthropy was all the more difficult because nearly all top 100 are involved in fundraising and charitable ventures. It is heartening that just as the UK has been good to so many Asian immigrants, many are now repaying through social, societal and community initiatives for the benefit of Britain.
We also have a lot to look forward to in the coming year.
Gurinder Chadha and Paul Mayeda Burges’ film Viceroy’s House, a true story about the final months of the British Rule in India, will be released in UK cinemas on 3rd March 2017. Anita Anand is to launch a new book she has co-written with William Dalrymple, the first comprehensive and authoritative history of the Koh-i Noor, arguably the most celebrated and mythologised jewel in the world. Shedding light on controversial research and investigating the ferocious gender wars in biology, psychology and anthropology, Angela Saini takes readers on an eye-opening journey to uncover how women are being rediscovered in her new book ‘Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong – and the New Research That’s Rewriting the Story’ which launches in May 2017.
The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that I have travelled forward through time to seemingly jump a year, but as so many new initiatives, projects, plans and launches are yet to come in 2017, this list as much a review of last year as it is a preview of the next.
The purpose of the Asian Power Couples Hot 100 2017 list is to showcase and celebrate the dynamism and energy of couples and pay homage to the true advancement and innovations that can come from two successful people working together; combining their efforts to better themselves, their families and often their communities.
So here it is, The Asian Power Couples Hot 100 2017. Enjoy!
